Of magic and more

Hi, y’all! My 8th attempt at writing 100 word flashfiction for FF, which is hosted by the lovely Rochelle Wisoff-Fields. Every week Rochelle chooses a picture prompt, on which we write approximately 100 words, give or take a few. Thanks Adam for this week’s picture 😀

Here are my 100 words 🙂

The village was united before the war tore it apart.

Overnight, friends became enemies, and suspicion spread like a poisonous fog.

A bridge was built to divide the village into two. Any person who tried to cross the bridge would be executed.

Lovers Hayden and Jasmine dared to defy. One clear spring afternoon, the two lovers were burnt at the stake.

Those involved in the execution were found dead in their beds the next morning. The surviving inhabitants fled the village in terror.

Legend has it, every leap year, the spirits of the villagers come back to replay the massacre.

Hi! I'm Sam, an 18 year old certified mad chick who likes to imagine that she can write. I live in India, a colourful, diverse country which is sadly getting polluted everyday by more and more violence....something no citizen can be proud of. I enjoy reading-basically horror, watching romcoms and horror flicks(yes, again horror, my favourite being Sinister- its psychotic just like me), eating( food, oh yes, I love foooooood), attending college, and most of all(oh, do stay and listen a while longer) I love animals. I have periodic urges to own and look random "pets". Currently I wish to own a baby elephant, which I will name Thama. I write to express what I feel, to keep that small creative bone alive in my body, and to make readers happy. I hope you like what I write!

  1. Creepy story! It reminded me at the beginning of standing on the (old) East-West German border as a child and seeing villages cut in two by the border fence.
I liked your take of the photo being a boundary, never to be crossed on pain of death.

  2. Dear Sam,

A house divided against itself cannot stand. Good story. I liked “suspicion spread like poisonous fog.”

  3. Yikes! really creepy story – but VERY WELL WRITTEN! Love it, Nan

  4. Funny, you would normally think of a bridge as uniting a community, not dividing it. Interesting perspective; great story. :>

  5. absolutely eerie. i particularly loved this line “suspicion spread like a poisonous fog”. great story 🙂

  6. I like that same line, Sam, and the Romeo-and-Juliet riff you achieved. Interesting that a bridge was used, almost as if to tempt people to cross.

  7. Lovely and spooky how the lovers’ death was avenged. Would love to read the story of how that was achieved. 🙂

  8. Great story. It was amazing how you described so well what can happen when people are divided in so few words. Overnight friends can become enemies. Small story, big insight into human psyche! 🙂

  9. Good story and well-written as usual. That was a terrible penalty. Perhaps the guilty consciences of those who did nothing to stop the terriible executions had something to do with their fear and the story about it recurring. The deaths of those who carried out the executions are a mystery of course. In fact, it would make a good mystery story.

  10. This would be an awesome fire pit story for camping!

  11. Loved how the star crossed lovers came back from the dead to avenge their deaths-horrid people burning the poor lovers like that!Loved your pov-excellent writing:-)
